Out of Medicine – Judge Issues Arrest Warrant for Rio’s Secretary of Health

Judge Gustavo Bandeira da Rocha Oliveira of the 5th Public Finance Court of Rio de Janeiro issued an arrest warrant this Tuesday (October 10) for the Rio de Janeiro state health secretary, Gilson Cantarino O’Dwyer, for failing to supply medication to treat multiple sclerosis to a patient. Márcia Alvernaz Machado, 33, suffers from multiple sclerosis and did not receive the medication Avonex.

On September 15, the judge ordered the drug to be supplied each month to her, under penalty of a daily fine of R$ 300. The secretary did not obey the order. The arrest warrant is already with the court clerk’s office.
The information comes from the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Appeal.

Consultor Jurídico Magazine tried to contact the health secretary through his press assistant, but could not locate him.
