Julia Cadernas

Julia and her grandmother

Even before the start of my work at BSAG, at the beach one day in Ipanema, in front of "Batista’s" kiosk, I ran into my former neighbor, actress Julia Cardenas, or as I still call her, Ju or Juca.

Julia is the same age as my children, and along with them spent her childhood and early teenage years in Pendotiba. At that time Pendotiba was a paradise – few house, few people and lots of tales to tell!

I remember her well: a child with an enormous sense of justice, and very creative. She was one of the leaders of all the neighborhood street “projects”, like the famous Muriqui neighborhood journal and the small popsicle factory that operated in my kitchen.

From our meeting at the beach we wound up at Hermenegildo de Barros Street, at the big old house that would become BSAG. Julia adored the place and immediately started to help me prepare the Center’s cultural project.

It is to her I owe my meeting with Jongo Maestro Darcy, along with many other people who have participated and still participate in BSAG.

BSAG would have never been possible without the dedication, involvement and excellent work of Julia Cadernas as cultural producer.
