Restoration of BSAG

When we started the restoration work, the main house was abandoned and in an advanced state of deterioration. Furthermore, during its years of occupation it had undergone a succession of remodelings and “fix-ups”, turning it from an elegant single-family home into basically a tenement, which created a dissonant quality and seriously detracted from its underlying charm.

The inside had been completely modified by adding internal walls to cut it up into separate units. As a result of all these changes and the prolonged disuse, it was in truly precarious condition for just about any use, with most of its original esthetic qualities seriously compromised.

Our Idea was not to restore it as a residence, but to adapt it to a new use as a cultural space, bringing back its original beauty and preserving as much of the original construction as possible, while upgrading its structural soundness and utilities.

The conceptual analysis led us to define the following objectives in this effort:

-reclaim the original esthetic quality, compromised by all the intervening changes;

-maintain the architectural quality of the entire set of buildings;

-build new installations and introduce all the technical updates necessary for use as a cultural center, including completely new wiring, plumbing, telephone, soundproofing, acclimatization, fire control and other safety features.

-transform spaces and build new constructions
to meet the new use and to rescue its esthetic qualities, intervening with a contemporary language without destroying the original harmony of the whole. For this reason, we removed all the interferences that hindered reading the original architectural idea.
